국립대 첫 프랜차이즈 교육 수출… 베트남서 경북대 교육과정 운영

5일 FTP대와 합의각서 체결, 하노이에 ‘KNU Vietnam’ 설립
경북대학교가 국립대 최초로 해외 대학에 프랜차이즈 형태로 교육과정을 수출한다. 베트남 현지에서 경북대 교육과정을 운영하고 학위를 수여하는 방식이다.
경북대학교는 3월 5일 베트남 하노이 에프피티(FPT) 타워에서 베트남 에프피티(FPT)대학교와 ‘프랜차이즈형 초국가교육(Transnational Education, 이하 TNE)’ 운영을 위한 합의각서(MOA)를 체결했다.
협약식에는 허영우 경북대 총장을 비롯해 최교진 교육부 장관, 응우옌 칵 타잉 FPT대 총장, 웅웬 반 코아 FPT그룹 회장 등이 참석했다.
프랜차이즈형 TNE는 국내 대학의 교육과정을 해외 대학에 제공해 현지 학생들이 한국에 오지 않고도 동일한 교육과정을 이수하고 국내 대학 학위를 취득할 수 있도록 하는 제도다. 기존 인적 교류나 공동 교육과정과 달리 교육과정 제공과 학사관리, 학위 수여가 결합된 방식이다.
이번 협약에 따라 경북대와 FPT대는 베트남 하노이에 ‘케이엔유 베트남(KNU Vietnam)’을 설립하고 경북대 학부 교육과정을 운영할 계획이다. KNU Vietnam 학생들은 하노이에서 경북대와 동일한 교육과정을 이수하고 졸업 시 경북대 학위를 취득하게 된다.
KNU Vietnam에서는 경북대 학부 교육과정이 3년 과정(연 3학기 체제)으로 운영된다. 경북대는 교육과정을 제공하고 학위를 수여하며, FPT대는 현지에서 교육과정 운영을 맡는다.
경북대는 2019년부터 베트남 타이응웬통신기술대와 교육과정을 공동 운영하는 ‘트위닝 프로그램’을 통해 현지 교육 협력 기반을 구축해 왔다. FPT대는 베트남 최대 IT 기업인 FPT그룹이 글로벌 IT 인재 양성을 위해 설립한 대학이다.
양 대학은 협약 체결 이후 학생 모집을 진행하고 올해 하반기부터 KNU Vietnam 운영을 시작할 계획이다.
허영우 총장은 “이번 사업은 국립대가 프랜차이즈 형태로 해외에 진출하는 첫 사례라는 점에서 의미가 크다. 경북대의 교육과정을 통해 베트남 우수 인재를 양성하고 국제 교육 협력을 확대하는 계기가 되기를 기대한다.”라고 밝혔다.

MOA signed with FPT University on March 5 to establish ‘KNU Vietnam’ in Hanoi
Kyungpook National University (KNU) has become the first national university in South Korea to export its curriculum overseas through a franchise model. Under this arrangement, KNU's academic programs will be operated locally in Vietnam, and students will be awarded KNU degrees.
On March 5, KNU (President Heo Young-woo) signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with FPT University at the FPT Tower in Hanoi, Vietnam, to implement "Franchise-type Transnational Education (TNE)."
The signing ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including: Heo Young-woo, President of Kyungpook National University; Choi Kyo-jin, Minister of Education (South Korea); Nguyen Khac Thanh, President of FPT University; and Nguyen Van Khoa, CEO of FPT Group.
Franchise-type TNE is a system where a domestic university provides its curriculum to an overseas institution. This allows local students to complete the same academic courses and earn a degree from the Korean university without having to relocate to South Korea. Unlike traditional exchange programs or joint curriculums, this model integrates curriculum provision, academic management, and degree conferment.
Under the agreement, KNU and FPT University plan to establish ‘KNU Vietnam’ in Hanoi, which will operate KNU undergraduate degree programs. Specifically, students at KNU Vietnam will follow the same undergraduate curriculum as those at KNU and will receive a KNU degree upon graduation.
The undergraduate courses will be condensed into a 3-year program (operating on a 3-semester-per-year system), and KNU will provide the curriculum and award degrees, while FPT University will be responsible for local operations and management.
KNU has been building a foundation for educational cooperation in Vietnam since 2019 through a "Twinning Program" with Thai Nguyen University of Information and Communication Technology. FPT University, KNU's new partner, was established by FPT Group, Vietnam's largest IT company, specifically to foster global IT talent. The two universities plan to begin student recruitment immediately following the agreement, with KNU Vietnam scheduled to begin operations in the second half of this year.
"This project is highly significant as it marks the first case of a national university expanding overseas in a franchise format," said KNU President Heo Young-woo. "We look forward to cultivating outstanding Vietnamese talent through KNU’s curriculum and using this as a catalyst to expand international educational cooperation.“
